There is this thing called the “difficulty bomb” in Ethereum which is actually the ascending tiers of sophistication of mazes found in the algorithms of mining in its blockchain. When these puzzles turn complicated a significant lull is formed amidst the blocks in Ethereum’s blockchain. As a result of the lull the whole mining process slackens and makes the mining not too appealing for the miners.
I am not sure if this “difficulty bomb” has happened yet, but Ethereum will likely switch from it’s proof-of-work consensus alogorithm to Casper, a proof-of-stake system that it’s developers are now completing. When this protocol change happens, the blockchain will hardfork- which means two networks will exist for a short period of time.
